A stunning real-life honeymoon in an idyllic Mexican resort

Looking for honeymoon inspiration? Jill and Aaron tell us all about their incredible trip to Cancun, Mexico, complete with amazing experiences paid for by their guests via Buy Our Honeymoon!

Where did you go, and why?

We went to the 5-star Sensatori Resort in Cancun, Mexico. Because it was our honeymoon, we wanted it to be special (obviously!), so we looked for somewhere that was luxurious but also relaxed – we didn’t want to have to wear ballgowns and black tie to dinner! I’m also a fussy eater,  so the range of restaurants was important, and this place had six!

One thing we really liked about Sensatori was that it had different areas, depending on how much you’d paid and who was in your party. For instance, if you were travelling with children, your room was in the Family block near to the children’s pool and main pool. If you were travelling with just adults but hadn’t upgraded, you were in the main block. If you had upgraded to Adults Only, you were in an adults-only block with a separate pool (complete with pool bar), and with the option of upgrading to a Swim-Up Suite — which we did! It was fantastic! No getting up at the crack of dawn to reserve sunbeds; we just opened our doors and there we were, next to the pool. Also a waitress came around all the swim-up terraces to bring us cold drinks, so we never needed to move!

Room service and the mini-bar in every suite was also included in the All Inclusive packages, which was brilliant because you never had to worry if you fancied a snack or a pizza in the middle of the night. The staff were also the friendliest people I’ve ever met. If I won the lottery I’d go there three times a year – minimum!

What did you do there?

We did LOTS of relaxing and sunbathing (come on — it’s Mexico!) but we also went on a few trips. The first trip we went on was to Xel-Ha, which is a natural waterpark. It’s hard to describe if you’ve never been, but it was fantastic to visit. Mexico are big on protecting the environment, so having a waterpark that was naturally made was great!

The second trip was to swim with dolphins! This was an extra treat as it was also my birthday while we were honeymooning. I’ve never swam with dolphins before so I had an amazing time!  We have some fantastic photos from that day which I’ll treasure forever.

Our final trip was to The Isla Contoy, which is essentially a desert island. Again, with Mexico being very eco-friendly, this island is protected land and visitors are restricted. It was a beautiful day and spending it on a stunning island with amazing views was just wonderful.

What was your most romantic moment?

While on honeymoon we had a candlelit dinner on the beach, which was so romantic. It was like something from a postcard – just perfect!

It’s great for honeymoons because…

It’s got plenty of special touches like the candlelit dinners, bubbly and scattered petals in your room, and optional upgrades to swim-up suites. Honeymooners also get breakfast in bed one morning of their stay. It’s idyllic! The hotel also has a fantastic spa. We treated ourselves to a couples massage, which was a perfect start to our honeymoon.

Why did you use Buy Our Honeymoon?

We looked around first at a few other honeymoon gifts sites, some of them were linked to a holiday company so you had to book your honeymoon through them and they would put your guests’ contributions towards the cost of your holiday. We liked the freedom of Buy Our Honeymoon. We designed our gift site ourselves, chose what we wanted to ask guests for, and even had the option for guests to choose how much they wanted to give rather than all prices being fixed. And we liked that Buy Our Honeymoon use PayPal to pay us directly, which was really convenient for us. It was all very simple to set up and our guests remarked that it was easy to use.
